When I was a little girl, more years ago than I can count on all my fingers and toes, I was given a camera for Christmas one year. The first thing I did was run outside, stand my dolls up in the snow (because it always snowed on Christmas day then) and photograph them. I still do that now. First light dusting of snow of the winter and this doll had to put her coat & boots on for a photo session.

This Bratz doll is all squared up for kick boxing. Not much use as a fashion doll, however.

Bratz dolls come in all skin shades, but the black ones are quite uncommon. They’re also very difficult to photograph because the camera seems to lighten the skin somehow.

This is Dahlia, the first Living Dead doll I ever bought. I was hypnotised by the sheer bad taste of her - based on Elizabeth Short, “The Black Dahlia”, a famous murder victim who was bisected and mutilated, Dahlia has stitch marks round her waist as well as at the sides of her mouth.

Sometimes I get secondhand dolls that have been attacked with felt pens, nail polish etc and look very battered. This one cleaned up nicely.

One of the first dolls I bought as an adult. She cost £1 in a charity shop and I’ve no idea what kind she is. She’s a bit bigger than the average fashion doll, with large feet, and wears a black one-piece.
